Nursing Reference Center (NRC) Contract Will Expire Dec 31, 2017 : NEW Nursing Point of Care Tool to be Chosen for Ascension Wisconsin

 Ascension Ministry Health Care’s current subscription for

 Nursing Reference Center (NRC)  will expire on December 31, 2017.

Why are we dropping the subscription to NRC?  

• Since 2014, Nursing Reference Center (NRC) has been a very popular and well-used point-of-care tool for our nurses.  At present, NRC is only available for legacy Ministry and Affinity regions.  The Milwaukee and Racine areas do not currently have access to this or any similar reference package.
•  It is cost-prohibitive to add the Metro (Milwaukee) and South hospital sites under the current Ascension Resource Group pricing model. 
• Nursing leaders at Ascension Wisconsin and national Ascension are in the process of evaluating the nursing point-of-care tools currently available on the market.  These include NRC, Lippincott and Clinical Key for Nursing (Elsevier).
•  We hope to choose a NEW nursing point-of-care tool that will be available statewide throughout Ascension Wisconsin, thereby helping to standardize nursing care resources and contributing to high reliability nursing care.

What you need to do in preparation :

• Use NRC while we have access!  Get the most out of it while it is still available.
• See the NRC Search Tips page for more information, including remote access and tutorials.
• Be aware that links to NRC documents and competencies will NOT be available after December 31, 2017.  This change may impact policies and other internal documents.
•  CEUs
• If you have CEUs logged in Cinahl Education (CEUs through NRC), be sure to log in and print out your records and documentation, as we may not have access to this information after the Ministry Health Care Subscription to NRC expires.

Keep your professional knowledge and skills up-to-date with CINAHL CEU Modules available through Nursing Reference Center (NRC).     There are over 1400 continuing education topics available.  

This service is open to nurses and allied health professionals (such as respiratory therapists, physical therapists, and more …)   Before taking the exam, you will be prompted for your name and license information.

CINAHL CEU modules are interactive educational modules that allow nurses (and other healthcare professionals) to satisfy CE requirements online.  They contain the latest topics on patient care and drug administration.  Each CEU consists of :

     ·         course materials

     ·         interactive review / practice test

     ·         a competency test

     ·         a certificate of completion

CINAHL is accredited as a provider of continuing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) and International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET).  Please check your certification-specific requirements.

                FirstConsult is similar to UptoDate, by offering review articles on 1400 primary care topics, including current evidence, treatment and dosing info, and more.

                ProceduresConsult is like YouTube for Medicine.  It’s great if you need to review a procedure before you have to do it.  It provides a web video, along with a complete write-up of the procedure, including coding info.

                Clinical Key includes 1100+ medical eBooks, and 500+ eJournals.

Links & Citations in Nursing Reference Center (NRC) – A Tutorial

People often ask me how to get a permalink and/or citations for documents in Nursing Reference Center.    This question comes up regularly when people want to :

• share NRC documents
• cite them in policies / procedures
• cite them in papers or
• CBTs
• or other venues
• or go back to them later

Unfortunately, people soon discover the url harvested from the browser location box times out and leads to an error message after a few short hours.  This tutorial on getting permalinks and citations in NRC should simplify the process, and save you time and frustration.

Nursing Reference Center - Home and Mobile Access

We’ve created a FrequentlyAsked Questions (FAQ) document  to answer some of the most common questions about Nursing Reference Center (NRC) at Ministry Health Care. 

See below for an expanded answer on home and mobile access to NRC :

1) Can I access NRC on my home computer or iPad?

>  Yes, NRC can be accessed from home for personal use* 

       Check the following pdf document  for access info.

   

*Note:  If used for work-related purposes outside of the associate’s scheduled working hours, prior approval is expected from the department leader before work is performed.  If the request is approved, the associate is responsible for accurately entering their worked time to the time and attendance system.  

Can I access NRC from my iPhone/iPod Touch? 

>  Yes, you can download a slimmed-down version of NRC for Apple mobile devices. 

       Be aware that the mobile version is not the full database.

>   How do I get the NRC Mobile app?

From any Ministry computer connected to our Intranet, access the NRC homepage

(ie : The Source > Links & Resources > Nursing Reference Center). 

Scroll down to the bottom of the page:

                                                                           

Click on the NRC iPhone/iPod Touch Application link.

Enter an email that you’ll be able to access on your iPhone or iPod Touch.

After you submit, it will send you an email with instructions to download the iTunes App along with an access key.  Follow the instructions …

To access on an iPad, you don’t need the mobile App.  You can sign in and have full access to the entire NRC database.    Use the instructions for accessing NRC on a home computer.
